Statement

I am Susan Fleming, a mixed media artist born and raised in Arizona where I completed my B.A. and M.A. in the Visual Arts with an emphasis on Fine Art Education. Teaching Fine Arts kept my creativity and imagination constantly flowing. Exploring and hiking around Arizona helped influence my love of nature and natural elements of which I have collected physical and mental images that reflect the world. My recent transplant adventures to the Carolinas are also evolving into new creative self expressions, including spiritual renditions which are discovered while using many applications of multiple media layers; often mixing charcoal, colored pencil, water color, acrylics, pastels, collage collections, and original digitally altered photos and sketches. The pieces seem to evolve through processes which are comprised of continuous intuitive decisions developing in harmony, I do not have predetermined outcomes, I love the discovery phases as they evolve. I truly enjoy this ceaseless urge toward fresh original abstract creations. I pray my art endeavors emotionally engage the viewers’ inner spirit and encourages personal healing, hope, and inspiration.

Biography

Mixed Media Artist: Susan Fleming/S Lance Fleming

As a recent transplant to the Carolinas from Arizona, my art has opened up in new directions. I work in a variety art styles and media from stylized, abstract, realistic, and /or a combination of these; often they are layered and pieced together in collage style. I am inspired to create fresh images from my subconscious, rather than duplicating what I visually see, my goal is to release images from the spiritual and emotional levels.

Spirituality and creation for me are very connected. Roger Dale Brown notes in his book: A PASSION FOR PAINTING, “The older I get and the more I experience, the more contemplative I become. And the more I realize that spirituality is an important part of my painting, and that painting is a passion. Painting brings in the spirit; it creates a meditative state wherein one loses track of time. We are made in the image of God, the Creator, so creativity is ingrained in us.”
